Everyone has different taste and opposing opinions when it comes to their “perfect burger”. Some look for great quality meat but could care less about the accoutrements and bun. Others are all about the add-ons and bun, while not knowing or caring the quality of the beef. I have found my “perfect burger” at Spruce Restaurant in SF.
I had only dined in Spruce’s main dinning room until just over a year ago when a friend introduced me to their bar seating and the Spruce Burger. From that moment forward I’ve found myself on auto-pilot heading to Spruce on a random Tuesday or Wednesday at around 3pm just to catch my burger-fix (they serve a bar menu, including their burger from lunch all the way through dinner-service).
What makes the Spruce Burger great is not just the slightly fried bun or the house-made zucchini pickles and it’s more than the pile of pink-ish pickled onions atop the perfectly prepared Neiman Ranch (20% fat) ground chuck– it’s the whole package deal that does it for me. The fries that accompany this burger (awesome when dipped in their aioli!) are TO-DIE-FOR! Their secret is to fry them, freeze them, then flash-fry them again, just before serving for that perfect crunch-encased soft, starchy magic we’re all searching for.
Having a fab glass of wine (I prefer red with the burger) while enjoying the burger is part of the whole package deal. Spruce has a great by-the-glass menu (I like the Brown Estate Zin, Willakenzie Pinot and the Rock & Vine Cab), or if you’re a party of more than yourself– their bottle selection is killer (or I really enjoy the 1/2 bottle of Peay Pinot).
If you are a burger fan and you haven’t yet tried the Spruce Burger, I highly recommend bellying-up and checking it out. It might not be your thing, or it might knock your socks off, either way Spruce has a great atmosphere that’s meant to be enjoyed.
