Some call biking the 26 (or so) miles down Haleakala an 8th wonder of the world. We had the chance to experience all the views and vistas the mountain had to offer on our last visit to the island. We started our day at 2am, headed for the Haleakala Bike Company where we were fitted for bikes and gear, then hopped aboard busses that drove all the way to the top. The amazing part of the ride was before the actual ride even began; at about 5:45am we saw the sunrise way above the clouds—a truly magnificent sight! Shortly after the sunrise, we were shuttled down the mountain a few hundred feet before we set off on our bikes. For the first quarter of the ride; it’s all twisty and hairpin-like, but so much fun to fly down. Then we came to a great little café; Kula Lodge, where we enjoyed a much-needed breakfast break. After breakfast, we were back in the saddle and headed for the home-stretch. After about another hour and a half, we reached the lot where we had set out in the wee hours. It was a great ride and something we highly recommend checking out next time you’re on Maui.
For your Information & Consideration:
There are many companies that offer a tour up and down Haleakala but we found Haleakala Bike Company to have the best bikes, best staff and great wind protection from the cold elements that we all might not expect from Maui.
